Mariana Castruita, an enhuberant leader at IOS Offices in Mexico, has been nominated for Community Manager of the Year from the Global Workspace Association. The finalist will be announced at the GWA FlexForward 2024 conference in Phoenix.
Her dedication to building community and her exceptional problem-solving skills have earned her this prestigious recognition. In an interview with Michelle Stiegler of Premier Workspaces, Castruita shared her journey, experiences, and insights into the world of coworking.
Before stepping into the flexible office industry, Castruita was a sales manager at Organitech, a company that sells furniture for various spaces. "I used to create layouts, manage meeting rooms, and design private spaces," she recalled. Her seven-year stint in the furniture business prepared her well for her current role, where she has been a community manager at IOS Offices.
Castruita's transition to the coworking industry was driven by her passion for connecting with people and optimizing environments. "I love that we can connect with so many companies, not just by providing spaces, but by understanding their functional needs and creating a personal connection," she said. Her ability to blend professional and personal interactions is a testament to her success as a community manager.
In her role, Castruita has faced numerous unexpected tasks. One of the most memorable involved picking up a partner's children from school. "I had to go to the school, pick up the kids, and bring them home because the director was occupied," she shared. This incident highlights the level of trust and personal connection she has built with her partners, who are referred to as "socios" in Mexico, rather than clients.
Castruita emphasized the importance of these personal connections. "Partners feel comfortable with me not only as a manager but also as a person," she said. She recounted a morning when a partner confided in her about a frustrating client meeting. "I listened, offered support, and reassured him that everything would be fine. It's moments like these that make a difference," she added.
One of Castruita's proudest problem-solving moments occurred when a water leak from the fourth floor affected an attorney partner's office. "The leak damaged some important papers, and I had to act quickly," she explained. Despite the initial panic, she managed to resolve the situation efficiently. "I talked with the building management, stopped the leak, and ensured the papers were moved to a safe place. We fixed everything within 72 hours," she recounted.
This incident showcased her proactive approach and ability to stay calm under pressure. Her quick actions and effective communication prevented significant damage and ensured the partner's satisfaction. "He was so happy that we took immediate action and had his back," she said.
Castruita takes great pride in creating a unique community at IOS Offices. One of the initiatives she leads is "Consejos que Inspiran," where selected partners act as ambassadors and discuss topics such as security, nutrition, and event planning. "We make them part of the community, allowing them to share their needs and ideas," she explained.
IOS Offices hosts various events to foster community spirit. "In my location, we organize at least two events per week, ranging from pop-ups and conferences to movie screenings and yoga sessions," Castruita said. These events cater to diverse interests and needs, promoting networking and wellness among partners.
Castruita described the ideal community manager as a proactive, responsive, and multi-skilled individual. "We do a lot of things, from organizing events to training teams and handling sales," she said. She believes that the role requires a combination of operational, sales, and interpersonal skills. "We connect people and help them achieve their dreams. It's not just about sales; it's about helping people," she emphasized.
Castruita's dedication to her role is evident in her commitment to making dreams come true for her partners. "We are always there for them, providing support and creating a welcoming environment," she said. Her ability to connect with people on a personal level sets her apart as a community manager.
Looking ahead, Castruita hopes for greater industry support and collaboration. She appreciates the webinars and meetups organized by the Global Workspace Association, which provide valuable insights and networking opportunities. "These initiatives make us feel part of a larger coworking lifestyle, where we can learn from each other and grow together," she said.
Castruita's journey from furniture sales to community management highlights her adaptability, dedication, and passion for building connections. Her nomination for Community Manager of the Year is a testament to her hard work and the positive impact she has made at IOS Offices. As the coworking industry continues to evolve, professionals like Castruita will play a crucial role in shaping its future and fostering vibrant, supportive communities.
